Health Tips & Information Sites Cases of norovirus and other GI infections continue to be seen in our local area. The symptoms of NLV infection include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. These symptoms usually begin 1-2 days after exposure to the virus and will last about 1-2 days in most people, with no long-term effects. Norovirus can easily be spread to other people, especially our sick and vulnerable patients. It is really important that health care providers stay out of work while they are having symptoms (and make sure they are well for 24 hours before returning to work). Food-handlers should discuss when they can return to work with their supervisors. Please contact your supervisor with other questions about returning to work. More detailed information on norovirus is available on the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Web Site at HYPERLINK http://www.mass.gov/dph/cdc/factsheets/nlv.htm http://www.mass.gov/dph/cdc/factsheets/nlv.htm. FLU Season Information The primary target groups recommended for annual vaccination are 1) groups that are at increased risk for influenza-related complications (e.g., persons aged >65 years and persons of any age with certain chronic medical conditions); 2) the group aged 50--64 years because this group has an elevated prevalence of certain chronic medical conditions; and 3) persons who live with or care for persons at high risk (e.g., health-care workers and household contacts who have frequent contact with persons at high risk and who can transmit influenza to persons at high risk). Influenza vaccines are safe and cannot cause influenza. Please remember that most patients who need influenza shots need pneumococcal vaccination. More detailed information is available in the Pharmacy News letter, http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5208a1.htm. Stroke Risk Factors Though many people know that a stroke is a "brain attack" and the number one cause of adult disability in the United States, most do not know the risk factors for stroke. Knowing the stroke risk factors is the key to early intervention and stroke prevention. Here are some health issues that can be treated to reduce stroke risk: 1) High Blood Pressure, 2) Diabetes Mellitus, 3) High Blood Cholesterol, 4) Tobacco Use, and 5) Physical Inactivity and Obesity. If you think that you or someone you know may be at risk for stroke, talk to a doctor, nurse, or other healthcare professional. Don't wait! An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. For more information about VA stroke research, visit the HSR&D Stroke QUERI Center Web site at www.va.gov/stroke-queri. Alcohol-based Hand Sanitizer The latest CDC guideline for hand sanitation recommends the use of no-rinse alcohol-based hand sanitizers for handwashing in healthcare settings to help decrease the spread of hospital-acquired pathogens.
