Remembering Pope John Paul II   1978-2005 - White Smoke and Bells Signal Election of New Pope on Second Day of Conclave
    Pope Benedict XVI
VATICAN CITY, April 19, 2005 - Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church elect Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, 78, of Germany as the new pope to succeed John Paul II, reaching an agreement on the second day of voting. Under the rules, the 115 voting cardinals chose the 265th pope with a two-thirds majority, or at least 77 voting in favor.
The election came 17 days after the death of John Paul, who succumbed to illnesses related to Parkinson's disease at his residence in the Vatican on April 2.
In his sermon Monday in St. Peter's Basilica, Ratzinger defended a conservative approach to faith. Ratzinger, who is German, spoke for the conservative side of a culture-war argument that is of primary interest to Europe and North America. When Ratzinger said on Monday "to have a clear faith according to the church's creed is today often labeled fundamentalism," religious conservatives far outside the ranks of the Catholic Church undoubtedly welcomed his words.
